All members are protected from SPAMmers and junk mailers.

All messages readable on the Web are limited to Group members only, but even messages open to the public to read are protected from SPAM by SmartGroups' unique email address protector.

Outsiders cannot efficiently harvest email addresses from the SmartGroups Web site.   Email addresses are mangled to thwart such harvesting in views other than the Email Address Protector view.   The Email Address Protector comes up when you click on a mangled address.   It allows you to send mail to the address, but the number of times it can be used per day is limited, so it is not useful to mass emailers.

Specifically, the Email Address Protector system removes the email account name from email addresses displayed by SmartGroups.com.   For example, if the original email address displayed is “joe@cs.ujdm.edu”, it will be changed to the meaningless address “@cs.ujdm.edu”.   A download of SmartGroups.com’s public HTML archives will only capture “@cs.ujdm.edu”.

SmartGroups does not send unsolicited commercial email and strongly endeavours to prevent others from doing so.

Anti-SPAM Measures

SmartGroups has developed technology to keep users from being exposed to unsolicited commercial messages (SPAM).   SmartGroups uses a proprietary SPAM detector that recognises SPAM and blocks it from being distributed to the Group.   The Group Moderator receives a copy of such blocked messages and can forward them to the Group, if they are acceptable messages.

SmartGroups has also implemented technology to protect users’ email addresses from being downloaded by mass emailers.   The privacy of subscribers is tightly guarded at SmartGroups.
