My name is Michael Storoszko, I am a graduate of the CGA Program of Professional Studies. Back in the December/January and March/April (1999) editions of Statements (CGA Ontario’s bi-monthly newsletter), I received some mention for the Student Email Study Groups I had set up to benefit students like myself that needed to network with other students. I am very happy to say that the Study Group service has been a great success. Since its inception, the Study Group service has been able to help CGA Students, not only in Ontario but across the country and beyond; we have members from Hawaii, California, Texas, Barbados, Bermuda, Hong Kong, China, France, and even Sweden! I started an Email Study Group back in Session 1 of 1998/99, originally just for a few students in the MA2 course. It quickly became popular with many students joining up. After the membership hit 50 I found the amount of moderator work I was putting in was growing exponentially. I needed an automatic email service to help out. I came across a group email service, eGroups.com, to host the Study Group Service and discovered I could have additional Study Groups not just MA2. The CGA Student Study Group Service was born. Membership in the MA2 Group quickly grew to over 200 members, still in session 1 1998/99. Membership in FA2 and MS2 grew in popularity as well. So much that total Study Group membership reached over 500 at the end of session 1. Word caught on in session 2 and membership grew again to over 1000 students at the end of session 2. The popularity of the Study Group Service has gone well beyond my expectations – at the end of session 3 membership reached in excess of 2100 students. Many students that participate in the Study Groups take the CGA courses through correspondence so this is a nature resource for them to be able to network with other students. Others in the Study Groups comprise of students that attend lectures but get a little extra input in the Study Groups that they don’t find at the lectures. Plus some of the Study Groups have CGA members as part of the membership and the students appreciate the contact and discussion they receive from these CGA members. Not all of the student members participate in every discussion; some are very active while others stay in the background and observe. The Study Group service allows each student with his/her own choice of level of participation. I originally started the Email Study Group to help develop networking with other students. Members of the Study Groups don’t just assist each other in getting our assignments done and studying for the exams, but provide a forum to discuss and debate how and why the solutions to our assignments are determined. Many students have formed networking friendships that will last long after they receive their designation. I look forward to being able to provide the CGA Email Student Study Group Service to any and all students in the coming year. For all those students interested in joining up – there is no cost involved – students can go to the web site:
